Volunteer Head Coach, MATHCOUNTS
Community House Middle School & Charlotte Middle School
Head coach for two middle school MATHCOUNTS teams and instructor for free, open-enrollment competition math classes reaching students in up to 20 states.
- Donated $6,000 of my own math camp earnings and 500+ hours over 5 years so the classes stayed free for roughly 300 students.
- Coached teams to Top 10 finishes at the North Carolina state level.
- Built the curriculum around explaining reasoning instead of memorizing formulas.
- Earned the President's Volunteer Service Award: Gold (250 hours) and Bronze (50 hours).
Teaching Assistant Roles
Teaching Assistant, Competition Math
Teaching assistant for Dr. Harold Reiter, a retired mathematics professor, in his competition math course.
- Coached students through contest-level problems for 3 years, breaking down each solution step by step rather than handing over answers.
- Supported instruction across algebra, number theory, counting and probability, and geometry.
- Helped students build the habit of explaining their reasoning out loud, which is how they learn to transfer a method to an unfamiliar problem.
Teaching Assistant
Teaching assistant for school-level math tutoring.
- Ran office hours outside scheduled class time for students needing extra support.
- Worked one-on-one with students on coursework, focusing on the specific step where their understanding broke down.
